Preschool and school for refugees and other children without personal number

Children under the age of 18 have the right to go to preschool and school once they have received a permit under the EU’s temporary Protection Directive or applied for asylum.

Also other children living in Sweden without personal number from the Swedish Tax Agency can apply for preschool and school

We need to determine your child's status in Sweden

The right to an education is different depending on your child's status in Sweden.

You apply to preschool, compulsory school or upper secondary school in our e-service.

Please attach:

  • a copy of the child’s passport or ID and
  • a copy of the child’s residence permit or
  • a receipt of the child’s asylum application or LMA card
  • other that is relevant to your child's status in Sweden

Once we have confirmed the child’s right to education you will receive an offer of school place.

First we confirm the child’s right to education and residence in Håbo municipality. We manage all applications centrally.

Preschool - for children 1- 5

If you have requested specific preschool your wish will be taken into consideration but placement is mainly based upon availability.

You will receive an offer within four month from your application.

The child’s parent or guardian need to accept the offer. If there are two parents or guardians both need to approve.

The preschool will contact you to book an initial meeting.

Compulsory school- for children 6- 15

If you have requested a specific school your wish will be taken into consideration but placement is mainly based upon availability.

Once we have confirmed the child’s right to education you will receive an offer of school place.

The child’s parent or guardian need to accept the offer. If there are two parents or guardians both need to approve.

The school will contact you to book an initial meeting.

Upper secondary school- for children between 16- 19

Youths between 16-17 years who need to learn Swedish will be offered a place at Fridegårdsgymnasiet’s introductory programme.
